Your child’s oral hygiene is crucial to a problem-free smile and healthy development. At Norfolk County Dental Care, we help children and teens care for their growing smiles in a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere.

Age-Appropriate Home Care

Your dentist can provide more detailed and personalized instructions on age-appropriate home care for your child. However, here are some tips.

0–6 Months

Wipe your child’s gums with a damp, warm cloth every day, especially before they sleep, before their teeth start to grow in.

6–28 Months

Brush your little one’s teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of non-fluoridated toothpaste. Also, we advise encouraging proper spitting habits to avoid swallowing toothpaste.

28 Months–Adult

Your child can start using fluoridated toothpaste but only use a pea-sized amount. Brush their teeth twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and floss at least once daily to remove plaque between the teeth.

Follow These Healthy Dental Habits

The best kind of dental exam is a cavity-free one. Parents can help kids by encouraging them to brush twice daily for at least two minutes and floss once daily. Let your child choose a toothbrush with their favorite cartoon character or superhero. Some toothbrushes even have music that plays for the allotted two minutes, which makes oral hygiene more fun and engaging.

Another tip is to make sure your child drinks plenty of water. Staying hydrated and moisturizing their mouths helps flush away cavity-causing bacteria.

A healthy, balanced diet is another must for healthy teeth and gums. Instead of snacking on sugary or starchy foods, choose nutrient-rich fruits, vegetables, and other healthy options.

The Importance of Routine Dental Care

Good oral habits and hygiene at home are crucial, but professional cleanings are also essential for sustained oral health––no matter your age. Routine visits to the dentist monitor changes in your child’s oral health and help prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental diseases. Your child’s dentist also provides fluoride treatments and sealants to protect against cavities.
